Son of: Joshua 1736
Settled in Marietta, Ohio about 1791, served in the Ohio Militia under Maj. Gen Joseph Buell 16 Dec 1806- 31 Mar 1807. "Nothing definite is known about his early life or about the date of his coming to Marietta, but, as he was one of those to whom donation lands were allotted by the Ohio Company, he was probably one of the settlers on the Ohio Company's purchase, who came about 1790. Other members also of the Bodwell family were among the early settlers at Marietta and elsewhere in Washington County, Ohio.
Donation Tract Lands were given by the Ohio Land Company to males (18 & over) who promised to carry a gun and protect the approaches to the Marietta settlement from the Indians. Each tract was for 100 acres and in some particular instances a man received more than one allotment. The period covered from 1790-1820 when the Indians were still to be feared. These 100 acre plots are laid out along the creeks or near the settlement and are coded according to land location. Joshua Bodwell #17 Southwest. On 11 Apr 1801, Joshua and his wife Sarah conveyed to Simeon Pool 100 acres (thought to be the donation tract). Earlier in the same year (15 Jan 1801) Joshua sold Lot 506 of the Ohio Company in Marietta to Griffin Green. On 2 July 1802, David Pierson sold Joshua an eight-acre lot, No. 285, which on 19 August 1803, Joshua sold to Set Fuller.
According to the records of Washington County, NW Territory (Ohio) Court of Common Pleas - Civil, Joshua Bodwell was engaged in no less than seven separate civil complaints between 1799 and 1803, both as plaintiff and defendant. This may explain the later move to Covington.
He moved to Covington, Kentucky apparently between 1823 and 1826.
Joshua is listed as a grocer on Front and Third Streets, Cincinnati, Ohio in the Cincinnati city directory for 1831
