Stephen Byron Bodwell (1846-1911)

Stephen was educated in the public schools of Lawrence. He worked on the farm of his father on Haverhill Street, Lawrence during his youth

Stephen enlisted and mustered (at the age of 15) July 5, 1961 in Company "F" of the 1st Massachusetts Heavy Artillery listing his occupation as laborer. He was discharged for disability on May 26, 1862 at Fort Scott, Virginia. He enlisted for a second time August 23, 1862 and mustered September 19, 1862 as a Private in Company "C" of the 50th Regiment of the Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry. At the time of his enlistment he listed his occupation as clerk. He served in the Gulf Department until Aug 24, 1863.

Afterward he worked for a time in Lowell, then engaged in the railroad business and became the road master of the southern division of the Boston & Maine railroad. Later he accepted a position as assistant superintendent of streets in Lawrence, then bought out the Wilson Building Moving Company, and about a year later he bought out a general contracting, concreting and asphalting business, in which he was very successful. He was a member of Lanson Post, Grand Army of the Republic, of which he was quartermaster. He was a member of the free masons, Commandery, No. 17, Knights Templar, and of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, No. 65. In politics he was a Republican and took a keen interest in public affairs, though he never sought public office. "Boston and Eastern Massachusetts, p. 1806.
