Neal W. Bodwell, 86, of Randolph, died unexpectedly Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2011, at MaineGeneral Medical Center in Augusta. He was born in Andover on July 19, 1924, the first child of Marion (Robinson) and Ira M. Bodwell. Neal went to school in Andover and graduated in 1941 as salutatorian of his class. He went to business college and took a number of correspondence courses in accounting. He went to work for the the Maine Department of Education. Later, he went to what was then the Bureau of Taxation and retired in 1984. He worked for the state of Maine for 35 years. In 1946, he married Jean Elizabeth Harris, and in 1949 his son, Russell, was born. Russ resides in Pennsylvania. Neal built two houses and remodeled an old farmhouse in Litchfield, which he and Jean both loved. He served several years as a Litchfield selectman. In 1992, Neal and Jean went to Florida on a vacation. They liked Florida so much they bought a house and lived there, returning summers when his mother was alive. In 2000, Neal got homesick for Maine and returned to be near his brothers and other relatives. Neal was a wonderful son, husband, father, brother and friend. He is survived by his wife, Jean Harris Bodwell; a son, Russell Bodwell; brothers Paul and Jim Bodwell; a niece, Debi Travers; and nephews Barry, Peter and Ricky Bodwell. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Feb. 7, at Staples Funeral Home, 53 Brunswick Ave., Gardiner. Burial will take place at a later date.
