On September 22, 1864, John enlisted and mustered as a Private in the 7th Battery Massachusetts Volunteer Light Artillery. He was discharged July 15, 1865, at Galveston, Texas. At the time of his enlistment John was living in Readfield, Maine and employed as a shoemaker.
