In 1883, Edward was running the largest retail store in the state of Maine. In was probably located on Vinalhaven Island and was supported by the quarry workers on the Island. The store was probably underwritten by his Uncle, Joseph R. Bodwell, and may have also functioned as a "company store" for the Bodwell Quarry Works on Vinalhaven.
