Charles Allen Bodwell (1857 - 1911)

Son of William 1834

Hon. E. M. Goodall and Charles A. Bodwell built a trout breeding house in 1879, at the Birch Log Brook and hatched out about 50,000 trout. In the spring following, 100,000 fry were purchased. As the trout grew, it was thought the water supply would be insufficient, so a tail pipe was laid to the river. In July the water became so warm that the fish died by the thousands. What remained were placed in the "Muck Hole" brook, but the experiment was finally abandoned, as the trout were fished out by boys at night and it was felt that the results would give no adequate return for the efforts made. (History of Sanford, Maine p. 386)

Charles was educated in the Sanford public schools. He learned the trade of block printing in the Sanford mills, where he worked until 1886. He then established himself as a contractor and builder, and for many years invested freely in real estate in his native town He was one of the prime movers in building the electric (rail) road from Sanford to Cape Porpoise, and was actively engaged in promoting and building electric railways until 1900. He has been superintendent of the water works since they were constructed in Sanford, and he built the water works in the town of Bridgton, Maine, in 1902, and was prisident of the Bridgton Water and Electirc Company of that town. He was also president and manager of the Sanford Light and Power Company from 1903 - . He had the contract for the water works at Berwick in 1901. He was superintendent of the Mousam River railway, the Sanford and Cape Pupoise railway; director of the Building and Loan Association of Sanford. He was one of the organizers of the Sanford Bank and was director several years. In politics Mr. Bodwell was independent. He was a member of the Springvale Grange, Patrons of Husbandry.
