Charles served as a private in Company "G" of the 6th New Hampshire Volunteer Infantry. He Enlisted 13 Nov 1861 and mustered in 28 Nov 1861. The 6th New Hampshire followed the 2nd Maryland's ill fated charge on the stone bridge in Burnsides assault during the Battle of Antietam.
Susan Emerson first married Heath by whom she had a daughter Martha F. Heath. Martha first married Henry Edmunds who died in 1888. Martha second married Albert Durgin who mistreated his stepson, so Martha arrainged to have him adopted by her mother Susan and Susan's second husband Charles Bodwell
