Dr. John Sardine Bodwell (1842-1924)

At the age of one John moved with his family (from Circleville) to a farm in Fayette County, Ohio. Here he lived until he was five years of age, and then moved with his parents to another farm in Auglaize County, Ohio, near the town of New Hampshire. Here he grew to manhood.

On April 18, 1861, four days after the first call for volunteers, he enlisted in the service of the Civil war, serving four months in Co K 15th  Ohio infantry, then re-enlisting in the 71st Ohio Infantry. He served continuously through many of the major as well as the minor battles, taking part in 34 engagements until finally wounded in the battle of Nashville, December 15, 1864. He received his honorable discharge at Camp Dennison, Ohio, after the close of the war May 23rd 1865.

After returning home he attended school and prepared himself for a teacher. He taught two years in rural schools and one year in the Soldiers' Home at Dayton, Ohio, many of the wounded soldiers being there with their families.

In 1869 he commenced to study dentistry at Wapakoneta, Ohio. In 1871 he came to Paxton, Ill., where he practiced dentistry for 31 years.

In 1872 he was married to Caroline Davis. On November 6, 1892 death came to his wife, leaving him with seven small children.
