Charles A. Bodwell (1840-1863)

Charles was a Private in the 11th Vermont Artillery, Company "I". He enlisted 21 July 1862 and mustered into the unit on 1 Sep 1862. At the time of his enlistment he was a resident of Glover, Vermont. During 1862 and 1863 the regiment was assigned to the task of guarding Washington, DC During this period the unit was also employed in constructing and garrisoning three forts on the north side of Washington: Fort Slocum, Fort Stevens , and Fort Totten. In the spring of 1863, Charles contracted a disease and died 26 May 1863. At that time men in his unit were dying from Black Measles and dysentery He is interred at Military Asylum Cemetery, D. C.
